Many people have asked why Logan Engineering used Ball Bearings in the Headstock of their Lathes. As New Departure used to say: "Nothing rolls like a ball"
During the development of the Lathe, Timken was invited in to determine if their tapered roller bearing would be more suited. They were given free reign to make whatever modifications were necessary.
After several tests, it was determined that the roller element was too prone to overheating, unless some provision was made to adjust the loading on the bearings. That was deemed to be counterproductive so the design engineers stayed with Ball Bearings.
